Every light source has a color, and cameras get it wrong constantly: tungsten bulbs paint family dinners orange, fluorescent tubes turn offices green, open shade goes blue, and mixed lighting produces casts with no name at all. The brain corrects for this in person — a white plate looks white in any room — but the photo keeps the tint forever, and everything in it drifts off-color with the whites.
Auto finds the cast and removes it, anchoring whites and grays back to neutral so skin, food, and fabric fall into place around them.
